Conservation Education for the Ever Changing Times
Diana Kelley, District Environmental Education Coordinator
Richland County, Ohio
The District's educational programming strives to provide current & pertinent, assistance and information to both the schools and the civic groups here in Richland County.
Much of the information that is pertinent to the classroom educators is shared through the Soil & Water District's "Environmental News", our educational newsletter, which is printed three times a year during the school year and sent out to all of the educators in the Richland County schools.
These can be scheduled by calling the office at 419-747-8686 or by clicking here to email Diana. There is NO CHARGE for presentations given by the district. All necessary supplies are provided just supply are the students. The district also provides a limited supply of educational materials in the form of posters and booklets to classroom teachers who request them.
The District works hard to keep their programming current and useful in the ever-changing educational arena. To assist the teachers in our county to make curriculum connections between the Districts's programs and the new content standards testing - the District has correlated its major programs to the content standard that it relates to. Check out the District's Content Standards Curriculum Connections.
To better meet the needs of the county's homeschoolers, the District has developed an Environmental Days. This one-day event provides its participants with a wide range of pertinent, hands-on activities. The Environmental Days is also a great way for traditional students who could use additional assistance and for scout members who are working on completing their badge work. This event is also free of charge and provides a free lunch too.
In an effort to stimulate and reinforce an interest in the environment and our natural resources, a number of Contests and Awards are sponsored by the Richland SWCD annually. All informative workshops and contests are conducted/put together by professionals in their fields.
We encourage educators to include conservation in their curriculum and present various Teacher Workshops throughout the year to assist them with hands-on training and valuable resources. Certified facilitators conduct all workshops. The District is part of the county's G.R.E.E.T. (Greater Richland County Environmental Education Team). This team of environmental education professionals conducts a variety of educational opportunities like School Days, which is held at Malabar Farm, a Workshop Series that provides continuing education hours through Ashland University, etc.
Environmental Education is not just for the k-12 grade students in the county, the District also provides a wide range of Adult Environmental Education Opportunities. These can include Developing Backyard Conservation Havens, in both large and small spaces, Pollution Proofing Your Home, where you learn how to reduce the amount of chemicals that you use and Stream Monitoring, where you learn how and conduct biological monitoring on a stream or river of your choice.
Please check out the education section at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. You will find fun activities for kids as well as lesson plans and education materials for Teachers.
